**About the WHO Health Emergencies Programme:**

 

The WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme (WHE) works to build Member States’ capacity to manage health emergency risks and, when national capacities are overwhelmed, leads and coordinates the international health response to contain outbreaks and provide effective relief and recovery to affected populations.  The Health Emergency Information and Risk Assessment (HIM) Unit within WHE focuses on identifying new public health events, assessing risks, conducting epidemiological surveillance and field investigations, monitoring interventions, and communicating public health information.

 

**Job Summary:**

 

Under the technical supervision of the PAM-HIM and overall guidance of the Regional Emergency Director, the Technical Officer will conduct epidemiological analyses, develop novel analytical approaches, and build analytical capacity related to infectious diseases.  This includes in-depth analysis of trends and transmission dynamics, assessment of intervention effectiveness, and development of analytical tools and methods. The role also involves creating epidemiological reports, providing technical assistance to countries, and conducting capacity building and training.

 

**Responsibilities:**

 

* Conduct epidemiological analyses, developing novel approaches and building analytical capacity.

* Analyze trends and transmission dynamics of infectious diseases.

* Assess the impact and effectiveness of public health interventions.

* Enhance and develop analytical methods and tools (e.g., R packages).

* Develop epidemiological briefing materials and information products.

* Provide technical assistance to countries to strengthen epidemiological analysis.

* Provide capacity building and training to WHO colleagues and partners.

* Assist in developing and updating regional strategic and technical documents.

* Submit an end-of-assignment report.

 

 

**Qualifications:**

 

**Education:**

 

* **Essential:** University degree in medicine, epidemiology, mathematics, economics, statistics, or a related health discipline from a recognized university.

* **Desirable:** Advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctoral) in one of the above fields.

 

**Experience:**

 

* **Essential:** At least five years’ experience in statistical analysis, data science, or information management, with experience in infectious disease epidemiology.  Experience working in low- or middle-income countries in coordination with Ministries of Health; demonstrated experience working on a large epidemic or public health emergency at national and/or international levels; and international exposure in a multicultural environment.

* **Desirable:** Experience in infectious disease modelling; field experience in epidemiology, surveillance, and/or control of acute public health events in low- or middle-income countries; experience working for WHO, a UN agency, or other international organization.

 

**Skills:**

 

* Expertise in statistical analysis and/or mathematical modelling of infectious diseases.

* Proficiency in operational analysis for epidemics and the R programming language.

* Working knowledge of other statistical analysis packages (e.g., STATA).

* Knowledge of infectious disease surveillance and control in an international context.

* Knowledge of public health aspects of infectious disease control, epidemic, and pandemic preparedness and response.

* Excellent communication, presentation, and writing skills.

* Strong organizational and teamwork skills.

* Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

* Willingness to deploy for international emergency health interventions.

 

**Languages:**

 

* **Essential:** Expert knowledge of English.

* **Desirable:** Intermediate knowledge of a WHO language.

 

 

**Remuneration:**

 

The annual base salary starts at USD 64,121 (subject to mandatory deductions).  Additional benefits include a variable post adjustment, annual leave, allowances for dependents, home leave, and an education grant.
