Job Description: The built environment team within the SELCO foundation works across a large spectrum of projects looking at infrastructure needs for the poor. The program types range from housing, livelihoods, healthcare and other public institutions. The Innovation team here conducts deep-dive studies, designs-prototypes and works towards creating evidence that brings out the need and impact of sustainable built environments. This includes critical R&D in the space of futuristic designing, need for structural innovation, automation, yet designing from the lens of the community – their aspirations and needs as well as the current impacts of climate change.

As the Built Environment – Innovation Team Lead, the applicant should have good sectoral understanding, experience in strategy planning, program design, managing a diverse team and partnership development and management. The role seeks further acceleration of the innovation work in the built environment sector globally.

About the Role & Responsibilities

  • Scoping and mapping the built environment sector for opportunities in innovation
  • Defining and justifying the relevant project types to be undertaken by the team through strategic planning including identification, engagement, building rapport, coordinating and co-developing programs with key stakeholders
  • Managing and building a team of 4-5 architects, designers and consultants to carry out projects and programmes in design, research and implementation where relevant
  • Anchoring design conceptualisation, review and carrying it to prototype/ implementation
  • Develop and conduct participatory processes of co-design with stakeholders
  • Research, both secondary and primary, and keep abreast on the sector – current developments in technology and architecture as well as rudimentary and traditional knowledge from the grassroot
  • Document and deliver critical learnings from the innovation/ design process and implementation work for the sector
  • Conduct regular team meetings with senior management and the implementation program team on best practices, learnings and continued way forwards thereby also ensuring coordination between the innovation and implementation teams
  • Develop and manage partnerships with long term strategic plans for each within the innovation space for sustainable built environments
  • Preparing and Managing budgets and cash flows of the team
  • Willingness to travel

Requirements

  • Architectural Degree with minimum 6 years strong implementation experience
  • Adept at AutoCAD software, Sketchup or any 3D modelling software, Photoshop or equivalent and InDesign or equivalent
  • Adept at coordinating between multiple team members
  • Analytical in approach and problem solving. Possess strategic thinking
  • Strong organisational skills that reflect the ability to perform and prioritise multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact with grassroot stakeholders
  • Can ensure clarity of thought in design development and content curation. Ability to process information and create compelling documentation for the sector
  • Ability to stay motivated when working independently
  • Ability to structure, track and monitor tasks and their progress
