About Just Net Coalition (JNC)

Just Net Coalition (JNC) is a global network of civil society actors committed to an open, free, just and equitable Internet. Founded in February 2014, the coalition engages on topics of the internet and its governance, with the goal to promote democracy, human rights, and social justice. IT for Change serves as the secretariat of JNC. 

JNC, through its coalition members and allies, is currently engaged in a process of driving systematic development of digital governance perspectives in key sectors of development. Through deliberations and dialogue among civil society organizations and a bottom-up processes to map the key priorities for digital governance, we are working to shape our global advocacy agenda for the mid-term. 

We seek an Advocacy Associate to help steer this process by leading the community/coalition-building efforts of JNC with stakeholders in the digital justice space. The involves coordinating the global advocacy and research activities of the coalition, as well as taking on the challenge of scouting for and initiating new networking arenas and opportunities, widening the impact of the coalition’s work, and forging meaningful collaborations with diverse stakeholders. 

This is a high-energy job and the ideal applicant must demonstrate persuasive communication and people skills, proactive thinking, and the ability to thrive and excel in situations and contexts that are out of their comfort zone.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Coordinating with stakeholders from current networks and reaching out to new constituencies for networking and alliance-building opportunities.
  • Developing and putting in place collaborative work protocols and communication processes to ensure alliances are meaningful, productive, and mutually rewarding.
  • Maintaining a calendar and steering processes to maximize key developments in local and global policy spaces, and listing milestones for annual advocacy events.
  • Ideating, implementing, and driving advocacy campaigns and efforts.
  • Facilitating cross-movement and intra-/inter-coalition dialogue.
  • Organizing online and on-site events and campaigns.

Interested candidates must have:

  • Excellent (oral and written) communication, facilitation, and organizing skills in the development sector.
  • Proven track record of at least 5+ years in regional/global network management, partnership building or community building role. This could be experience with global campaigns and coalitions, anchoring advocacy actions, public interest litigation, and/or influencing policy agendas.
  • Experience with managing people, resources, and action plans effectively even in asynchronous, semi-formal, and remote arrangements.
  • Familiarity with using digital tools and social media effectively.
  • Familiarity with global debates in various developmental areas, including geopolitical and geo-economic issues. 
  • Keen interest and experience in digital justice issues and policy.
  • A Master’s degree in development, social sciences, media studies, or allied fields.
  • Ability to work in short turnarounds, planning and executing campaigns, issuing press notes, and managing high pressure advocacy moments.

Desirable:

  • Oral/written fluency in multiple languages.
  • Experience with labor, trade justice, and/or feminist movements.
