About Pratham and ASER Centre:

Pratham was founded in 1995, to provide pre-school education to children in Mumbai slums. Over the last 20 years Pratham has grown to be India’s largest NGO working to provide quality education to underprivileged youth and children in over 21 states and union territories across the country, with a range of interventions.

Established in 2008, ASER Centre is Pratham’s autonomous research and assessment unit. ASER conducts the largest citizen-led annual household survey of children in India. ASER Centre promotes a culture of evidence-based decision-making and seeks to develop and use simple yet rigorous methods to generate evidence on scale on the outcomes of social sector programs, especially education. It also aims to strengthen the link between evidence and action by building the capacity of individuals and institutions to design, conduct, understand, and communicate the results of assessments that focus on key outcome indicators.

Assessment Unit:

Assessment Unit at ASER Centre designs assessment tools for National and International Programmes across subjects /domains for Early Childhood Education (ECE), Primary and Upper-primary age groups, and EdTech programmes.

Additionally, assessment tools to measure teachers’ effectiveness have also been created and are evolving continuously. In recent times, the Unit has also started developing tools to measure the impact of technology-led learning interventions and adaptive assessment tool design on android applications.

About the position and who we are looking for:

The Assessment Associate (Language) will work closely with various units at ASER Centre and Pratham to primarily design educational assessments for ASER Centre projects, Pratham programmes, and other external assessment projects. The Assessment Associate will be responsible for owning our assessment projects for Language programmes end-to-end.

The key responsibilities are as follows:

• Facilitate the development of simple yet discerning items/assessment tools to check children’s knowledge and skills for various programs.

• Facilitate pilot testing of the tools to enhance the quality of items

• Translating and validating items and content to enhance the quality of the assessment tool

• Making standardized assessment tools for different programmes

• Designing educational assessment tools to facilitate the use of large-scale student assessment data, and generating insights from them.

• Building team capacity by conducting training and workshops on Assessment designing, Item writing, understanding results, report writing, etc.

• Spending considerable time in the field by setting standard processes, doing training for invigilators, and helping out with field and other relevant implementation processes.

• A minimum commitment of 2 years is required.

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree; preferably in education, psychology, or other related fields, and at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Key Skills and Knowledge Requirements:

• At least 2 years of hands-on experience at a leading assessment agency including Test Framework design, Item writing, and Field Testing.

• Experience in teaching in a classroom and working in language assessment is desirable.

• Excellent people management and project delivery skills, including the ability to develop project plans, drive execution, manage multiple projects at a time, and maturity to influence multiple internal and external stakeholders.

• Strong analytical skills; able to drive actionable insights from data and create “easy-to-use” work products. Proficiency in M.S. Office (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) is mandatory.

• Strong language skills in English and Hindi (verbal and written), and articulation (clear communication). Proficiency in a regional language is desirable.

• Be comfortable with traveling extensively to rural locations across the country, sometimes at short notice.

• Work well under the pressures of time while maintaining standards of academic rigor.

• Willing to deliver well beyond tasks assigned under tight deadlines.

• Ability to write original or adapted stories/essays etc.

• Ability to take up intensive desk-based research on topics related to education and learning

• Ability to summarize research/academic information and present it to the stakeholders

• Knowledge of school textbooks

• Knowledge of the education landscape

Understanding OR interest in the following:

• Linguistics

• Study of languages

• Reading acquisition

• Measurement of psychological traits

Remuneration:

Remuneration for this position will be in the range of Rs. 35000-39000 per month. The following factors will be considered while making the final offer to the selected candidate:

Travel, food, and accommodation for work-related travels outside base location shall be separately borne or reimbursed on actuals by ASER Centre.
