WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Lead design projects with small multidisciplinary, multilevel designers and sometimes internal and external partners from start to finish and be a point of contact for partners/stakeholders.

• Manage end-to-end design process, including and not limited to planning, writing briefs, research, prototyping, synthesizing, content/deliverable development, and documentation.

• Be a leader but also a doer. Roll up your sleeves, inspire and execute various aspects of the project. Willingness to conduct and have prior experience in field work.

• Deliver highly creative, generative approaches to our work and projects and lead teams through research processes, synthesis/analysis, and insight development.

• Plan and facilitate workshops with the team in engaging ways.

• Mentor junior members of the team and grow into being a line manager for junior team members. Ability to plan goals and critique respectfully.

• Commit to timelines and be conscientious about the team meeting project timelines/deadlines/budgets.

• Confidently state your point of view and be able to back that up if there are questions and convert the outcomes of projects into thought leadership pieces.

• Work with minimal supervision but require contact with the Director levels.

• Work with director levels in strategizing for the lab that includes project planning and scoping, culture building, hiring and capacity building.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR

Design prowess:

• 7+ years of lived and professional experience in service design and design research or related fields.

• Experience working at a design agency or creative capacity at an organization (either in system and service design, visual communication design, product design, etc.).

• Process rigor including a flair for visualizing research prompts, using generative techniques in the research, knowing and using different ways to record observations, quotes, finding themes and patterns, writing solid insights, and the ability to craft the story behind the research, as well as the capability to get validation through secondary research.

• Support knowledge management for prospective and ongoing lab projects to improve existing systems. • Identify and drive opportunities from project learnings contributing to thought leadership, strategy, and external-facing work.

Relationship/Community building:

• A practice of fostering psychologically safe spaces, trust, and accountability for teams, partners, and community members.

• Deep care for facilitating dignified, equitable design research experiences that are additive and not extractive to participants, and the ability to thoughtfully touch upon heavy topics.

• Experience, skills, mindsets, & behaviors to elevate our co-Design practice:

Fluency in co-design, human-centered design, participatory design, and other equity-centered design methodologies.

• Experience with community building and collaborating across a range of stakeholders in service of collective action.

Workplace skills and requirement:

• Experience planning projects with a start and end date, setting up the project framework, and preparing project timelines through specific project management methodologies and tools.

• Skilled at spotting early potential risks that might delay projects and mitigate them.

• Strong communication and time management skills to stay on track with timelines and effectively troubleshoot challenges to move projects forward.

• Proactiveness in anticipating challenges/opportunities and working with the team to address the same. • Understanding the requirements and challenges of setting up a new department in an organization and working towards the common goal of its establishments while fostering a sense of shared accountability. • Work closely with the Design Researchers on the project to create and execute recruitment briefs and logistics, both with internal teams and external contacts (sometimes through cold calling
