Position Summary

Being the Communications and Marketing Director of Teach For India is an excellent opportunity to be entrepreneurial and creative. Working towards our audacious goal of building 50,000 leaders in service of educational equity will require a thriving imagination, a strategic mindset, and an orientation to implement at scale. You will be part of a Communications team of hardworking and passionate young people, digital marketing and content curation experts. You’ll sit on a leadership team that works across 25 verticals in service of our vision of an excellent education for every child.

This role will see you advocate for student voice and leadership, essential pillars of a reimagined India. Come work for a strong NGO brand, interact with Students and Fellows across 8 Cities and work with an invested media agency and Board, along with access to external experts. Come narrate the impact of the leadership of our 4000+ Alumni across the country, who reach 33 million children. Through this role, discover the joy of telling stories, both online and offline, and nurture your skills to communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders from Gen Z to Donors, from Students to Influences, not just to inspire but also to ensure every Indian can act with love and find little and large ways to ensure India’s children get an excellent education.

Responsibilities

As Communications Director, you will lead a 6-8 member team, work with a pan-India leadership team and advise the CEO on brand messaging, PR and thought leadership. You will be responsible for three critical areas of work:

1. Recruitment, Selection & Matriculation: You and your team will aim to bring in 650+ Fellows to serve more than 250+ schools across eight cities each year. You will ensure that we have both online and offline recruitment campaigns supported by stories of impact. You will support the creation of messaging and branding to bring in the right Fellows to serve as leaders. This will involve a mix of print and digital campaigns, PR and thought leadership to advocate for ‘Leadership as Teaching’. You will identify and work with influencers and a large community of ambassadors to amplify our Fellowship. Along with your team and the Recruitment and Selection team, you will think of messaging consistency from awareness of the Fellowship right to the first day the applicant joins Teach For India.

2. The Teach For India Brand: You will be responsible for all external communications for Teach For India. You will own the overall brand identity, brand strategy and core messages of Teach For India. This includes our 2.4 million Social Media footprint, our website, newsletters, and all PR and thought-leadership efforts to amplify the messages of students’ voice and leadership for ed-equity. You will play a pivotal role in identifying and forging partnerships that further our movement internally and externally. You will also serve as the primary liaison with reporters, managing incoming media inquiries and pitch stories and writing and reviewing communication materials (op-eds, press releases, policy statements, talking points, and speeches).

3. In-house Brand Experts: You and your team and an internal and outsourced design team services design requests from various verticals to support Teach For India’s goals. You will host flagship events to ensure brand messaging, rigorous programming and consistency. You will ensure that we are brand aligned and compliant with editorial, photography and social media guidelines.

4. Other Opportunities: Teach For India works with several incubated brands, such as TFIx, KER, Firki, and InnovatED. The Communications team supports their outreach, PR and skill development in Communications. 

Minimum Qualifications, Experiences and Expectations

  • 7+ years of work experience
  • Strong written and verbal skills, including experience with presentations and story-telling
  • Ability to effectively interface with multiple audiences, internal teams and stakeholders while presenting complex ideas clearly and in an engaging manner
  • Ability to execute in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Strong project management and organisational skills
  • Strong time management skills and flexibility to accommodate multiple projects simultaneously, with tight deadlines
  • Creative aptitude and familiarity with interactive design, website management/maintenance and social media marketing platform
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a team to results

Preferred Qualifications, Experiences and Expectations

  • Proven track record in developing and leading comprehensive communications, media relations, marketing and online strategies, including experience managing social media outreach
  • Relevant work experience in marketing and communications/PR. 
  • An advanced degree in Communications, Journalism or an MBA in a creative industry. 
  • Prior non-profit or education-related experience.
