The Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP) is seeking to hire a scholar for its Foreign Policy and Security Studies vertical. The candidate is expected to be able to frame and conduct policy-relevant research on India’s evolving role in a dynamic regional and global landscape.
The scholar is expected to be able to develop and implement research projects, build requisite teams and produce high-quality publications such as working papers, journal articles and books, besides shorter dissemination outputs. We are seeking a Fellow/Associate Fellow who is interested in producing cutting-edge research work that helps inform policies and decision-making on India’s international engagements.
The scholar is expected to have an advanced grasp of the literature on India’s external engagements and foreign policies, along with the ability to conduct evidence-based, empirical and policy-relevant research.
We are open to a variety of methodological approaches, both qualitative and quantitative such as archival, data-driven and fieldwork, amongst others. We are also open to candidates with different disciplinary expertise focused on foreign policy issues, including international relations, international political economy, international law, history, and area studies.
While not a requirement, we particularly welcome scholars whose expertise can also contribute to our existing research programs, including the Sambandh Initiative on regional connectivity (neighbourhood studies), China’s influence in South Asia, and global climate cooperation.
CSEP provides unique opportunities to work in a collaborative environment with researchers and experts in India, the region and the world. We work with in-house, national and global experts, and regularly interact with stakeholders including industry and policymakers.
Key Requisites:
- PhD in the relevant subject (or be close to completion) and ideally have related scholarly publications or significant research and work experience in the domain.
- The ability to contribute to CSEP’s research agenda with strong methodological expertise directed at informing and shaping public policy.
- Proven experience in conducting independent research projects.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex issues in a clear and concise manner to practitioners and non-expert audiences.
- A passion for applied research and a commitment to making a positive impact through evidence-based recommendations.
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams and mentor junior researchers.
- The candidate must be comfortable representing CSEP externally in workshops, seminars, and conferences both in India and abroad. The candidate must also be able to network and build connections with key stakeholders in the government, civil society and academia.
