Janaagraha is a non-profit trust, established in 2001, working towards the mission of transforming quality of life in India’s cities and towns. It works with citizens to catalyse active citizenship in city neighbourhoods and with governments to institute reforms to city governance (what we call “City-Systems”). Janaagraha is part of the JANA Group – one of India’s best-known groups of not-for-profit institutions working towards the mission of fixing India’s cities. Swati Ramanathan and Ramesh Ramanathan co-founded Jana Group in 2001 and it presently works across citizen participation and city governance reforms (through Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy), city planning and design (through Jana Urban Space Foundation), municipal consulting services (through Jana Urban Services for Transformation Pvt. Ltd.), banking and financial services for the urban poor (through Jana Small Finance Bank) and affordable housing for the urban poor (through Janaadhar).

We are looking for a Head – People and Culture to lead the human resources function at Janaagraha.

What will Head – People and Culture do?

  • Assume full ownership and accountability for onboarding highly talented team members, creating an enabling ecosystem for their development and a culture of engagement and performance, in partnership with the leadership team
  • Deliver to pre-agreed standards on the people and culture function including talent scouting, onboarding and induction, performance management, staff engagement and well-being, learning and development, compensation and benefits, and culture, as applicable to individual team members, teams and the organisation. Review and strengthen design and implementation of policies and processes to support the organization’s people and culture strategy
  • Identify and implement best practices in people and culture policies, processes and practices as relevant and necessary
  • Design and implement innovative practices with respect to diversity, equity and inclusion, staff engagement and well-being and learning and development, best suited to Janaagraha’s context and needs
  • Design and implement an effective and high-quality internal communications system and process
  • Ensure full and timely adherence to legal and compliance requirements
  • Evaluate current people systems and digital tools, improve and optimise as required to fulfil the people and culture strategy
  • Develop and implement budgets for the people and culture function

What competencies does it take to be Head – People and Culture?

  • Strong understanding of people and culture function through the entire lifecycle of talent scouting, onboarding, induction, performance management, staff engagement and well-being, learning and development, compensation and benefits, and culture
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent people management, engagement, networking and listening skills
  • Strong project management, reporting and communication skills
  • Sound understanding of organisation development strategies and practices
  • High levels of emotional maturity to empathize with the perspectives and needs of staff
  • Ability to adapt to contextual needs of the sector, organisation and staff
  • Working knowledge of legal and compliance requirements

What qualifications and experience will Head-People and Culture possess?

  • 15+ years of experience in human resource management with at least 5 years in managing HR teams at CHRO/CHRO – 1 level
  • Strong track record of delivery
  • Experience in development sector will be an added advantage
  • A bachelor’s degree in Management or Human Resources or related field
