About SELCO Foundation :
SELCO Foundation is an open source, not for profit organization that engages in field-based R&D and ecosystem building to drive decentralized renewable energy solutions to alleviate poverty and fight climate change.
Climate change is the single biggest threat that the world is facing this century. The climate crisis threatens to undo the last fifty years of progress in development, health, and poverty reduction, and to further widen existing health inequities between and within populations. COVID-19 was a stark reminder of our weak health systems. India, with a country of billion odd people, is facing similar developmental challenges in public health – health inequity, urban-rural divide, increased healthcare expenditures, disease burden etc. To overcome these challenges, there’s an urgent need to upgrade the rural health infrastructure in India.
Access to energy is fundamental to provision of health services – appliances to support deliveries and maternal care, store vaccines, ensure timely diagnosis and undertake life-saving interventions. One in three health facilities in India lack access to reliable energy, thereby decelerating universal health coverage. Decentralized Solar energy solutions coupled with high impact and energy efficient technologies can improve equity, access and quality of healthcare. SELCO Foundation has deployed decentralised renewable energy solutions with energy efficient technologies in over 2000 health facilities across India. On this ‘World Health Day’, SELCO Foundation & IKEA Foundation launched a new initiative ‘Energy for Health’ to drive decentralized solar energy solutions with efficient & innovative medical and electrical equipment to 25,000 last mile public health facilities across 12 states in India by 2026. This initiative is launched in partnership with India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) and various State Health Missions. This initiative will not only improve healthcare outcomes but also reduce carbon emissions, mitigating the impact of climate change, building resilience, and advancing multiple Sustainable Development Goals.
