About Fortify Health

Fortify Health is a GiveWell-funded NGO with a team of dedicated entrepreneurs working to improve nutritional iron status and reduce iron deficiency anaemia at population scale in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal, India. We aim to expand in other states in India in the next three years. We improve nutritional iron status through fortification, a recognised, effective public health intervention that involves the addition of essential micronutrients to staple foods.

Fortify Health supports millers who are willing to adopt fortification by proactively removing industry barriers, and works with state governments to adopt and expand fortification in social safety net programs (with a focus on the Public Distribution System). Complementing our entrepreneurial model, we provide nutrition training, career development opportunities and a wide range of resources to guide the team.

Position overview

The Program Officer will assist in managing a range of partnerships with mills for the implementation of an upcoming project in partnership with the Government of Madhya Pradesh. The Program Officer will be based out of Bhopal or Indore (with up to 60% of their time including travel to other locations, mostly in Madhya Pradesh) will assist the Partnerships team in ensuring that fortification work in the project’s partner mills is conducted as per standards set by Fortify Health and FSSAI. This includes equipment installation, maintaining the sound implementation of fortification in the mill, ensuring our processes are compliant with regulatory standards of fortification, and collaborating with the Monitoring and Evaluation team at Fortify Health to ensure fortification operations in mills are based on evidence.

The Program Officer will also have a base of knowledge about the milling industry and milling technology, to facilitate fortification successfully in mills. The Program Officer will initially report to the Director of Government Relations, and will receive mentorship from management in the Program team.

Responsibilities and activities

Provide technical assistance to the relevant government departments on chakki atta fortification
Support the partnerships team and relevant government departments in sensitization on chakki atta fortification
Support the partnerships team and relevant government departments in developing a systematic plan for capacity building of partner mills
Coordinate visits to mills with Fortify Health’s technical consultants and partnerships team
Assist with implementation and maintenance of fortification in partner mills through regular visits
Oversee smooth installation of fortification equipment in partner mills
Provide technical advice and support to partner mills on all stages of implementation and fortification process
Ensure work is well documented
Collaborate with monitoring and evaluation team to ensure that their findings are used to improve operations
Proactively learn from technical consultants to develop expertise in industrial milling
Actively participate in team calls and meetings

Requirements

Experience or background in the milling industry, with a good technical understanding of mill setup and machinery
Bachelors or higher degree in related field
Proven ability to manage professional relationships and to work under pressure
Strong verbal and written communication skills, especially relating to partnership management of millers and vendors
Excellent organisational skills and ability to work effectively on multiple projects
Excellent documentation skills
Strong creative problem-solving, teamwork and interpersonal skills
Willingness to travel around 60% of the time (this may include within base location)
Willingness to relocate to Bhopal or Indore
Authorisation to work in India (Indian national, eligibility for OCI, etc.)
Fluency in Hindi
Professional fluency in English
