Purpose

CEEW seeks to hire a suitable candidate with an understanding of the technical and behavioural aspects of energy use in buildings for its developing work stream on energy-efficient buildings in Rajasthan. The role will involve critically analysing various policies, programmes, and regulations that impact the energy performance of buildings with the objective to identify bottlenecks and propose institutional, financial, technological, regulatory and behavioural solutions to enhance the energy intensity of the built environment in the state. The candidate will be expected to engage extensively with government, industry and civil society stakeholders at the state and sub-state levels, and should preferably have some previous experience of conducting qualitative and quantitative research.

Besides the work on energy-efficiency in buildings sector, the candidate will be expected to provide data collection and analytical support to the larger team working towards increasing the share of renewables in the grid, optimising power procurement costs, improving billing and collection efficiency, embracing new technologies (smart meters and energy efficiency), and behavioural interventions to influence responsible energy use. An ideal candidate should have the demonstrated experience of working with key stakeholders in the sector.

Job duties and accountabilities

Primary responsibilities

  • Co-conceptualise and implement research interventions to enhance the energy efficiency of the built environment. 
  • Use qualitative and quantitative research methods to critically analyse existing policies in the buildings and urban development sector. 
  • Build strong networks of trust and relationship with key stakeholders in the sector, including government officials, regulators and civil society organisations.
  • Write high-quality research reports and publish in leading peer reviewed journals.
  • Generate and disseminate knowledge and findings from studies and implementations by way of presentations, memos, short reports, opinion pieces, videos, etc., with the help of CEEW’s outreach team.
  • Present research to key constituencies, advisory bodies, conferences and research institutes.
  • Keep a tab on the policy developments in India and across key countries of the world on power and buildings sectors.
  • Travel to project sites to conduct interviews or collect data for research. 

Selection Criteria

Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical or civil engineering, or architecture.
  • Candidates with a Master’s degree in energy policy, public policy or related field will be preferred.

Work experience

  • At least 2 years’ work experience in design consultancy or research in building energy systems and/or energy efficiency.
  • Ideal candidates would have a strong research background and past experience in stakeholder engagement across government and industry.

Key skills

  • Knowledge of factors affecting energy usage in residential and commercial buildings. Candidates with experience in analysing and/or designing behavioural interventions would be preferred.
  • Ability to conduct systematic review of academic and grey literature, government notifications, reports and legislation.
  • Candidates with proficiency in quantitative analysis and tools such as Excel, R, Python etc. would be preferred. Experience with visualisation tools like tableau and spatial analysis tools would be a bonus.
  • Strong technical expertise and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent eye for detail.
  • Strong drive, self-motivated and a self-starter.
  • Ability to work individually and in a team. 
  • Proficiency in written and spoken Hindi and English is a must.
  • Ability to identify creative solutions to vexing challenges in taking policy to action.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, projects and internal/external resources in a fast-paced environment, while meeting deadlines and quality standards.
  • The candidate should be willing to travel.
