Purpose

We are looking for a strong emerging leader at the Research Associate level for our team who has the ability to conduct stellar research on climate resilience (CR), build trusted relationships with government stakeholders and on ground local civil society organisations, and support the advancement of the research and policy engagement for building climate resilience. S/he should also be an effective mentor and role model for the junior members of the team with the ability to guide, train and provide direction to the team members across technical and people management aspects.

About the focus area:

The Climate Resilience programme at CEEW envisions a future where institutions, infrastructure, economies, and people are insulated from the risks of a changing climate. Backed by rigorous data analysis, integrated research and strategic communications and stakeholder engagement, our work is geared towards building on ground community resilience by:

  • Examining, identifying, assessing and predicting risks related to extreme climate events such as floods, droughts, and cyclones, variabilities in temperature and rainfall, and the compounding impacts of associated climate events at the national and sub-national levels.
  • Building tools to assess community resilience and adaptation capabilities and help climate-proof lives and livelihoods through data-driven research and strategic outreach.

Job Duties and Accountabilities

Research

  • Conduct in-depth research/review and analysis of issues and trends related to climate change risks and extreme events, especially on disaster related loss and damage, through robust quantitative/ econometric analysis on a range of subjects, and present information from diverse sources
  • Undertake various types of econometric analysis in STATA/R/python using various primary and secondary datasets
  • Collect, collate and review large amounts of data and analyse information using a variety of mathematical tools and interdisciplinary methodologies
  • Ability to organise information coherently using structured frameworks
  • Provide technical assistance in developing background and substantive documents to inform UNDRR’s contributions to the Global Stocktake and the Global Goal on Adaptation and Santiago network on loss and damage
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills. Publications in professional or scientific journals are a plus
  • Superior analytical abilities, effective oral and written communication skills and comfortable with numbers and ability to make sense out of large data sets

Project/Programme assistance

  • Conceptualise new research ideas that are aligned with programme objectives
  • Develop climatological models using big data analytical tools
  • Develop a series of publications including policy briefs, reports as well as publish in high-quality peer-reviewed national and international journals
  • To engage with city and state nodal agencies to understand their research requirements
  • To develop relationships with Civil Society Groups, Resident Welfare Associations, and city-based youth networks to develop a neighbourhood level understanding of building on ground community level resilience across various states in India
  • To assist the team in working on multi-disciplinary projects, proposal writing and project development
  • Assist with project implementation, including help with preparing presentations and policy material​

Selection Criteria

Education

  • Strong academic credentials, preferably a Master’s degree with a specialisation in fields relevant to Environmental Science/ Natural Resource Management/ Environmental Policy/ Climate Studies/ Urban Planning/ Public Policy/ Agriculture
  • Familiarity with environmental and in particular, climate change and governance in the country

Experience

2-3 years of relevant work experience

Main skills

  • Knowledge and passion for building climate resilience in India
  • Experience in navigating and establishing trusted relationships with government stakeholders and local civic groups
  • Knowledge of working with various spatial tools and software like ArcGIS, QGIS, ERDAS, Meteoinfo
  • Knowledge and understanding of programming languages such as Python, R, etc.
  • Strong analytical skills, including quantitative research skills
  • Excellent written and presentation skills
  • Experience in leading stakeholder meetings and consultations
