Research Analyst – Climate Risks (Urban Planning)

Purpose

CEEW seeks to hire a Research Analyst primarily for its Climate Risks programme. The Research Analyst will have to do primary and secondary data collection, geo-spatial, and meta-analysis. The work might require frequent field visits and coordination with various stakeholders. Candidates with Environment Technology /GIS/Environmental Sciences/Climate Sciences backgrounds are encouraged to apply for this position.

Job Duties and Accountabilities

Research

  • To assist in CEEW’s ongoing research on climate risk assessments by contributing to regional planning spanning compact city planning, existing developments, urban forestry and economics to aid India’s landscape climate-proofing.
  • To support the spatial and temporal impact analysis of key formal and informal land uses that are sustainable landscape planning.
  • To support evaluation of building codes, development control regulations (DCR) and planning norms and identify gaps for climate-proofing of both built and natural assets and infrastructures
  • To develop research projects to strengthen and expand the research programme on sustainable landscapes spanning natural ecosystems, and infrastructure planning.
  • Assisting the analysis related to Govt agency related budgetary allocations and cost variations for infrastructure climate-proofing
  • Develop research-based insights on climate risks, with cross-cutting themes on disaster management, urban planning, mobility and resilient infrastructure planning.
  • To support and contribute to the sectoral risk assessments
  • To perform spatially and meta-analysis of climatological variables using mapping and ML-based tools; knowledge and research experience in Urban planning tools like AutoCAD, Adobe Suite, Revit.
  • Support in developing disaster resilience framework for planning and monitoring of critical infrastructures.
  • Develop multi-hazard scenarios for critical infrastructures through qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • To support and create baseline spatial and temporal data sets on infrastructure-based risk assessments.
  • To conduct field surveys: questionnaire designing, coordinating with field staffs
  • To analyse data using tools like Advance Excel, SPSS, Auto CAD, R, etc.
  • To participate in relevant conferences, workshops, training programmes for a comprehensive understanding of the climate risks

Project/Programme Assistance

  • Assist with project implementation, including help with preparing presentations and advocacy material
  • Assist with building a database of a wider community of experts, scholars, institutions and potential donors in the environment, water and climate risks domains
  • Assist with conceptualising and developing a public outreach and youth involvement strategy for CEEW
  • Support efforts to use new media platforms for wide dissemination of CEEW’s work and, in turn, closer engagement with the wider community
  • To assist the team to work on multi-disciplinary projects, proposal writing and project development
  • Assist with preparing regular updates and emails for distribution
  • Participate in weekly team meetings and assist with preparing minutes
  • Accompany the CEO and other team members for meetings with other stakeholders; prepare minutes of the meetings and assist with relevant follow up

Selection Criteria

Education and experience

  • Master’s degree with a specialisation in physical planning, urban planning, remote sensing, architecture and urban and regional planning, public policy, or related field
  • Should have a strong research background, including an understanding of experimental and analytical research.
  • Familiarity with urban planning based public policy research techniques and tools (GIS, AutocAD, Revite, etc.) is a must
  • Understanding of climate risks, disaster risk reduction, and dynamic risk assessments
  • Experience in dealing and analysing with spatial and meta-data 
  • Minimum one-two year research experience of conducting urban risk resilience assessments, infrastructure planning and assessments spatial and meta analysis, climatological analysis
  • A fair understanding of sustainable landscape panning that are used for mitigating climate risks

  • Experience in primary data collection preferred
  • Experience in dealing with stakeholders (farmers, grassroots workers, government, climatologists etc.) preferred
