Purpose 

CEEW seeks to hire a Research Analyst for its Power Sector team. Our power sector programme is driven with the mission to support the clean energy transition in India by examining and promoting operational, financial, and environmental sustainability throughout the value chain of the electricity sector through evidence based objective research and cutting-edge analytical approaches. We are looking for an experienced professional with hands-on experience and deep sectoral understanding, to build and expand the work on energy efficiency in thermal power generation as well as industrial sectors.

Pertaining to coal-based generation, the research focus would be on opportunities to improve efficiency of the generation fleet through an assessment of various state level dependency on coal based generation and contracts and tracking the environmental performance of coal-based fleet. Additionally, the role would also assess the dependence on captive generation by industrial units and the economic and technical implications of switching to procurement through different green power options. The candidate should have an idea of the electricity market and its economics. An ideal candidate should be able to liaise with key actors to develop and communicate solutions to emerging issues.

The successful applicant will assist fellow researchers in undertaking robust quantitative and qualitative analysis. In addition to the duties and responsibilities outlined below, the candidate should be prepared, as and when necessary, to take on additional responsibilities and respond to events and developments that cannot be anticipated easily.

Job Duties and Accountabilities:  

  • To understand the challenges and drivers for renewable energy uptake by the corporates
  • To evaluate the new markets instruments to support renewable energy integration
  • Assist in the evaluation of the efficiency of captive power plants of the industries and identifying the efficiency gaps
  • Assist with specific projects and overall plan of activities in CEEW’s power sector programme
  • Regularly track important developments (policy and technical) in the sector through rigorous literature review and share summary with team members to bring them up to date
  • Assist in writing high-quality research reports and publish in leading peer reviewed journals
  • Generate knowledge content – blogs, policy briefs in regular intervals
  • Assist in preparing presentations, fact sheets, and other research communication material
  • To participate in relevant conferences, workshops, training programmes as necessary to communicate research findings and gain insights on new research in focus areas
  • Travel to industrial/project sites across multiple states to conduct interviews and collect data for different research projects

Shortlisting Criteria and key skills:

  • Foundational degree in engineering is a pre-requisite. A graduate degree in economics, development economics, public policy, energy economics or related disciplines such as energy management would be desirable.
  • At least 2-3 years of relevant work experience with a track record of project assistance and timely delivery of outputs.
  • Should have a good foundation in coal-based power generation, along with an understanding of the value chain of thermal power generation, electricity markets and basic economic principles.
  • Ability to analyse and visualise large data sets. Proficiency in using MS Excel; Prior experience in the use of statistical tools like MATLAB/STATA/R/Python is desirable.
  • Strong analytical and networking skills.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to summarise and communicate the insights/findings as reports and presentations.
  • Prior publications in peer-reviewed journals/book chapters would be a bonus.
