**Job Description: Research Associate – Demand for Cooling**  

**Location:** Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

**Language Requirement:** Hindi (preferred)  

**Length of Commitment:** Less than one year  

 

**About the Organization:**  

The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) is a global research center dedicated to reducing poverty by ensuring policy is informed by scientific evidence. J-PAL South Asia, based at the Institute for Financial Management and Research (IFMR) in India, focuses on analyzing and disseminating research results to build partnerships with policymakers for evidence-driven decision-making.

 

**Project Description:**  

J-PAL South Asia is collaborating with Tata Power to conduct a randomized controlled trial (RCT) involving urban households in Mumbai. The study aims to understand cooling demand and how locus of control influences energy use, led by principal investigators Dr. Teevrat Garg, Dr. Maulik Jagnani, Dr. Shefali Khanna, and Dr. Patrick Behrer.

 

**Key Responsibilities:**  

– Design survey questionnaires, conduct qualitative research, and refine study instruments.  

– Supervise data collection and ensure compliance with research protocols.  

– Manage field teams, including recruitment, training, and supervision of staff.  

– Liaise with field staff and partners, ensuring project timelines are met.  

– Analyze data using statistical packages like STATA and produce outputs such as graphs and tables.  

 

**Desired Qualifications:**  

– Resourceful and self-motivated with strong organizational skills.  

– Experience in managing or conducting field data collection.  

– Excellent written and spoken communication skills in Hindi and English.  

– Proficiency in STATA and/or R preferred.  

– Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in economics or related fields.  

– Familiarity with randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
