Job Opportunity for Research Associate (power sector modelling) – Energy, Natural Resources and Sustainability at CSEP in New Delhi

Website CSEP

CSEP is looking to hire a Research Associate to work in ongoing and proposed research in the Energy, Natural Resources and Sustainability group across various studies on the power sector in India, and seek to hire a researcher with experience in power system modelling and analysis.

About CSEP

The Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP) conducts independent, in-depth, and policy-relevant research, and provides evidence-based recommendations to the challenges facing India and the world. It draws on the expertise of its researchers, extensive interactions with policy makers as well as convening power to enhance the impact of research. Our researchers work across the domains of Economic Growth and Development including Health, Urbanization; Energy, Natural Resources, Climate change and Sustainability; and Foreign Policy and Security. All our research and policy recommendations are freely available to the public.

CSEP is based in New Delhi and registered as a company limited by shares and not for profit, under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 1956 (now Section 8 of Companies Act, 2013).

About the role:

One highly recommended skill includes familiarity with standard packages for grid modeling, especially balancing (e.g., Plexos or GridPath or other platforms). Our focus is not on deep load-flow analysis but rather on policy-linked analysis under different regimes of market design and regulation, from short-term to long-term power supply strategies. The understanding of power markets especially under the energy transition will be a plus. We have internal bottom-up modelling at CSEP as well, and the candidate should be familiar with the fundamentals of the space instead of only experience using tools (which risk becoming a black box).

The Research Associate position is for candidates with 2+ years of work experience, ideally with a Masters, but with a Bachelors in exceptional cases with work experience.  For strong candidates without sufficient experience, they can be considered at the Research Analyst level, with a pathway to elevation as Research Associate.

A candidate with stronger relevant experience (5+ years) will be preferred.

Key Functions:

Analysts responsibilities span three major threads of effort:

  • Specific research and analysis for selected studies
  • General and supporting research for multiple threads of research (including working with senior researchers)
  • Other required activities for overall team research (including helping or coordinating with other researchers)

Key Requisites:

A base list of desired skills and background includes:

  • Bachelor’s (with additional specific work experience) or Master’s Degree in Energy or Electrical Engineering or other relevant domains including economics, especially power systems and markets
  • Minimum 2+ years of work experience
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively
  • High degree of proficiency in MS Office and other relevant tools (which will vary per study)
  • Good writing skills are essential
  • Ability to coordinate, work across domains and deliver quality products on-time
