The Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP) is seeking to hire a scholar for its Foreign Policy and Security Studies vertical. The candidate will build and develop a research stream on India and Global Climate Cooperation Frameworks. This includes assessing India’s climate diplomacy across existing bilateral, mini-lateral, and multilateral frameworks or establishing new ones to prioritise climate mitigation and achieve net zero targets in India’s development priority sectors. This work may include a strategic assessment about various established frameworks at the regional and global levels, for example the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the G20 or new frameworks such as the International Solar Alliance (ISA), the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) or the Minerals Security Partnership (MSP).
While the scholar is expected to have an advanced grasp over the literature on India’s climate issue areas, institutions and foreign policy positions, we are open to different methodological approaches, including international relations, international political economy, history or security studies.
As part of CSEP’s institution-wide work on India and climate change, we provide opportunities to work with a diverse community of researchers, including junior, senior and distinguished fellows within the organisation and globally. Publication of high-quality research work is required and the selected scholar will also be encouraged to develop a long-term research agenda and build requisite teams.
Desired criteria/skills:
· The candidate should have a PhD in the relevant subject (or being close to completion) and ideally also have some related scholarly publications, or significant research and work experience in the domain. The position is commensurate with the candidate’s academic qualifications and professional experience.
· Deep understanding of scholarship and key policy issues relating to Indian climate diplomacy, regional and global climate cooperation frameworks
· The ability to define, lead and implement CSEP’s research agenda in this domain with a strong research toolkit directed at informing and shaping public policy.
· S/he must be comfortable representing CSEP externally in workshops, seminars, and conferences both in India and abroad. The candidate must also be able to network and build connections with key stakeholders in the government, civil society and academia.
