Swaniti Initiative works to strengthen climate action and the developmental needs of people through public service delivery by working with state and local governments across South Asia with a strong focus on India. Swaniti’s interventions have included strengthening policy implementation by identifying current gaps and limitations, providing research support to elected representatives about best practices in moving forward, and developing data-technology tools that can back decision-making processes. With flagship initiatives in India like Supporting Parliamentarians in Analysis and Research in Constituencies (SPARC) and Leadership and Engagement Associate in District (LEAD), Swaniti has supported constituency development and district development planning in various parts of the country. At present, Swaniti works along with 200+ Hon’ble Members of Parliamentarians for policy making in India and acts as advisors to state governments to ensure the delivery of policies to the last mile. Major verticals of our work are climate and sustainability, social protection, and livelihood. Although much of Swaniti’s work has focused on South Asia, it’s expanding its engagement more globally in countries such as the U.S. and striving to become a global voice on climate change and sustainability issues. 

Job Summary

The Fellow / Senior Fellow will be responsible for leading Swaniti’s research and public engagement work on energy transitions, climate change, and economic development, contributing to the thought leadership and strategic direction of Swaniti’s work in these areas. They will conceive and lead events to advance Swaniti’s research, publish research reports, and represent Swaniti as an influential voice in the energy transitions, climate change, and economic development space globally and in India. Additionally, the Senior Fellow / Fellow will organize and participate in events such as workshops and roundtables to advance Swaniti’s research and analysis work. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Design, collect data and conduct research studies across different Indian states on energy transitions, climate change, and economic development.
  • Lead Swaniti’s research and public engagement work on energy transitions, climate change, and economic development.
  • Develop project research designs, apply qualitative and quantitative research skills, and publish research reports.
  • May be required to occasionally travel to different states in India or overseas.
  • Contribute to Swaniti’s thought leadership and strategic direction on climate, energy, and economic development.
  • Work with and mentor interns, analysts, and associates to produce research and facilitate their professional development.

Specific Job Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct studies on the mapping support and tax revenues related to fossil fuels and clean energy sectors at a sub-national level in India.
  • Design and conduct studies on energy transition related topics such as just transition, net zero impacts among others.
  • Lead report writing on study findings.
  • Collaborate with Swaniti’s state teams to gather necessary data for the study.
  • Present the study at different forums for wider dissemination and discussion

Qualifications

  • Senior Fellow – Ph.D. in energy, environment, economics or related fields with 7-10 years of experience.
  • Fellow – Ph.D. or Master in above fields with at least 5 years of experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct quantitative data analysis.
  • Ability to work well independently and collaboratively as needed. Must possess a self-starting and entrepreneurial outlook for leading research.
  • Must be fluent in writing and speaking English, demonstrated through prior research reports or academic publications; knowledge of additional languages is an asset.
  • A passion for making a positive impact in the world.

Skills and Attributes Required

  • Ability to read and analyze corporate and government documents and annual reports 
  • Desirable skills include quantitative skills with R or any other coding languages 
  • Desirable skills also include skills in spatial analysis using QGIS or ArcGIS
  • Skilled in policy analysis
  • Prior experience conducting literature reviews
  • Excellent English writing skills.
