Digital Blended Learning is recognised as a strategically important area of future growth at IIHS. The vision for the IIHS Digital Blended Learning programme is ambitious, and involves the creation of a portfolio of online courses and other online/blended learning offerings spanning a range of subjects relevant to the study of the Urban, for both domestic and international audiences.

The Senior Instructional Designer – Digital Blended Learning will be responsible for designing and developing compelling learning experiences across MOOCs and other online learning courses at IIHS.

Activities and Tasks

Responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Conducting primary analysis of learners/teacher needs and mapping them to appropriate pedagogical and instructional strategies based on the target audience profile and intended learning outcome;
  • Working closely with faculty/SMEs both internally and externally, to identify learner requirements, define course goals and learning objectives, and draw up course outlines;
  • Reading up and chunking relevant content (researching and sourcing content if necessary), writing effective instructional text for audio-only, audio-visual and reading-text formats; reviewing content scripts of other content developers;
  • Visualising course flow, user interface, instructional graphics, ahead of the finished product; conceptualising engaging learning content and activities in various forms (videos, text, animation, interaction and assessment activities) that enhance knowledge retention and application, using proven instructional design theories, methodologies, approaches, and formats;
  • Creating crisp storyboards; conducting storyboard walkthroughs; guiding graphic developers and product developers while implementing storyboards;
  • Working closely with all relevant stakeholders through the online learning course development process to ensure that time, money, and quality levels are met;
  • Actively researching and tracking trends in the digital blended learning domain in terms of players, technologies, tools and products;
  • Supporting marketing outreach activities for online learning;
  • Providing support to other IIHS activities including academics, research, training, practice, operations and others;
  • Participating in all activities of Institution-Building at IIHS; carrying out tasks as assigned by IIHS; and travelling on IIHS work within or outside the country as and when needed. 

Structure and Reporting

  • The Senior Instructional Designer will be a Senior Associate on the Digital Blended Learning team at IIHS, and will report to the Lead – Digital Blended Learning or any other person designated by the Lead. The role will require effective collaboration with a diverse group of internal teams and external individuals/organizations, and students.

Person Specification

Applicants should have at least 7 years of experience as an Instructional Designer or an author or a content writer in a learning or IT company, of which at least 4 years should be in designing online learning programs. A degree or (certified) training in instructional design, educational technology, or similar would be an added advantage.

The key skills / attributes required are:

  • Understanding of and interest in some of the key areas that IIHS is involved in;
  • High degree of English language proficiency (writing, reading and speaking) is mandatory; additional proficiency in other Indian languages would be an added advantage;
  • Knowledge of learning theories and instructional design models;
  • Requirement analysis, macro and micro design of courses and modules;
  • Ability to create course outlines, lessons and curriculum plans; design standards documents; assessments and learner engagement strategies; instructional and collaborative learning activities;
  • Ability to create crisp storyboards and write effective instructional text, video scripts, and audio scripts;
  • Familiarity with eLearning authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline 360, Vyond, Lectora,
  • Elucidate, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia; understanding of their capabilities and limitations;
  • Understanding of capabilities of commonly used online learning platforms like Moodle, Coursera and edX;
  • Ability to create promotional material for digital and social media to help in outreach activities for courses;
  • Ability to work individually, as a leader of a team, as part of a team, and with outsourced entities;
  • Rigorous attention to detail;
  • Experience of working on time-bound and budget-driven projects;
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours from time to time;
  • Experience in working with the research community would be an added advantage.

This position is based in Bengaluru and may entail travel to other locations within and outside India.
