Job Description

The SPO will be based out of Guwahati office, BHL in Assam, will work in the different states of India and will report to the Lead Rhino Conservation, WWF India.

Key responsibilities:

  • Programme Development – will support the Lead Rhino Conservation in developing plans and strategies as well as project proposals.
  • Programme Implementation – will support the Lead Rhino Conservation and the Landscape Coordinators in field implementation of rhino specific activities. Will work closely with the veterinarians for animal health works and with the community team for coordination and synergy in activity planning and implementation.
  • Networking & Advocacy – will be involved in developing a network of partners for smooth execution of the works and will have to discuss with senior level officials in both the government and other sectors relevant to the works.
  • Reporting – will be responsible for preparing technical and programmatic reports on a time bound manner.
  • Will assist and support the Lead, Rhino conservation in preparing plans, proposals and reports and support the landscapes teams in the implementation of the various activities related to Rhino conservation in the states of Assam, West Bengal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
  • Will be supporting the technical works related to rhinos implemented in the landscapes / states including preparation of technical reports and papers.
  • Will be responsible for monitoring and analyzing the emerging threats and risks to the rhino population in India and in executing activities for addressing the threats.
  • Will be responsible for monitoring habitats for rhinos and in developing an understanding of the drivers of change, including climate.
  • Will be responsible for independently conducting scientific studies to understand rhino population dynamics, human rhino interactions, ranging patterns, etc.
  • Will be providing support for undertaking rhino translocation, radio collaring and rescue as and when necessary in the landscapes.
  • Will be supporting the Lead Rhino and the Landscapes in developing resources for networking and collaborating with multiple stakeholders and partners, including government organizations / officials and communities.
  • Will provide support to other works of WWF-India team in any area within India as found necessary from time to time.

Requirements

Education and key competencies :

  • Masters degree in Wildlife Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Life Sciences, Geography or any other relevant subject.
  • Efficient in use of computing software related to report preparation, image handling, database creation, Map creation, GIS, etc.
  • Preferably experienced or skilled in the use of software used for analysis like Vortex, Maxent, R, etc.
  • Preferably four years’ experience of working on rhino’s or other large mammals in Assam / India.
  • Excellent writing, presenting and communication skills in English, Hindi and Assamese.
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple programs and deliver time bound and high quality products.
  • Travel extensively and work in remote locations.
