Position Objective:

To oversee and ensure the smooth functioning of all areas of PETA India’s animal emergency and cruelty response departments, including engaging with the police, veterinarians, clinics, and other stakeholders as required

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Ensure all emergency response and cruelty case staff work is guided by the ethos of not allowing animals to suffer
  • Monitor, manage, and guide PETA India’s animal emergency and cruelty response departments, including our cat sterilisation project
  • Work closely with the managers of PETA India’s animal emergency and cruelty response departments as well as other staff members in these departments as needed
  • Work with managers to recruit, motivate, manage, and maintain staff in these departments
  • Ensure top-quality animal care and responses by PETA India and through the systems we use at all times, including what is reasonably possible through partner NGOs and clinics
  • Ensure the smooth functioning of all areas of work in these departments, including making sure ambulances are running properly, answering the emergency hotline number, handling incoming cases, and dealing with members of the public
  • Ensure all callers and complaints are handled in an effective and efficient manner
  • Ensure all emergency response and cruelty cases are correctly concluded by working with relevant staff and stakeholders (which could, for instance, mean returning an animal after recovery or taking a cruelty matter to court)
  • Oversee the recruitment of suitable partner NGOs and volunteers
  • Apply the knowledge of the law and effective letter-writing techniques to ensure positive outcomes for animals through law enforcement and other means
  • Oversee staff who file first information reports (FIRs) and other complaints with the police or perform this duty personally when necessary
  • Work with the CEO to determine the best care and course of action for each individual case
  • Work with relevant team members to ensure adequate inventory keeping, equipment maintenance, record keeping, and other upkeep tasks
  • Conduct spot checks and use other monitoring tools to ensure quick and suitable responses to the public at all times, particularly during emergencies
  • Effectively review letters for a variety of common and uncommon emergency and cruelty-to-animal cases for a variety of stakeholders
  • Be aware of the functioning of police, relevant government bodies, and other agencies so that matters can be effectively escalated when necessary
  • Train or facilitate the training of staff, volunteers, partner NGOs, and other helpers to ensure the suitable quality of responses
  • Personally deal with members of the public in a respectful manner if a matter escalates
  • Represent PETA India to the public, NGOs, volunteers, veterinarians, government agencies, the police, and other stakeholders in a professional manner at all times
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution in a relevant field
  • Veterinary or legal degree is a plus
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience (which may include volunteer work)
  • Minimum of five years of management experience
  • Exceptional organisational, management, time-management, and multi-tasking skills
  • Thorough knowledge of Indian animal protection laws as well as relevant police and government hierarchies
  • Passion for facilitating law-enforcement work and preventing cruelty to animals as well as helping animals in need
  • Ability and willingness to travel independently and even extensively, as needed, to handle emergency and cruelty cases
  • Ability to deal patiently and professionally with staff and stakeholders
  • Outgoing and personable manner with excellent communication skills
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Fluency in Hindi and English
  • Knowledge of other local Indian languages a plus
  • Compassionate, responsible, and self-reliant character
