The Researcher – Hydrology and Water Resources Management will be part of a new one CGIAR Research Initiative on NEXUS Gains: Realizing Multiple Benefits Across Water, Energy, Food and Ecosystems (Forests, Biodiversity). The researcher will play a key role in the NEXUS Gains activities in the Ganges basin, particularly Work Package 1 (trade-off analyses and foresight methodologies) and 2 (boosting water productivity and storage management). The successful candidate will be familiar with the policy landscape on water-energy-food systems, have advanced knowledge of modelling Water-Energy-Food systems and integrated surface-groundwater modelling tools, water productivity, and have good experience in stakeholder engagement processes. Working with the project leadership as well as with other CGIAR colleagues and national and international partners, the Researcher will be part of a multi-national and multidisciplinary team that is contributing towards realizing gains across the water, energy, food and ecosystems with a focus on forests and biodiversity for the ecosystem component in transboundary river basins by leading global nexus thinking and providing tools, guidelines, training and facilitation for analysis and research for development.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with One CG NEXUS Gains leadership to fine-tune the activities to the specific context of the Ganges basin.
  • Analyse and contribute to the development of new WEFE Nexus Innovations at basin scale using modelling, foresight and trade-off methodologies
  • Co-develop tools and solutions for increasing Water Productivity and integrated storage
  • Management at the Basin Scale
  • Take lead in stakeholder engagements with relevant government departments and partners to ensure that important local, national and regional demands in the Ganga basin for research for development are identified and incorporated into the research activities specific to hydrologic modelling and water productivity.
  • Facilitate participatory processes; stakeholders’ engagement and partnerships; co-designing of innovations; and project management.
  • Support the Nexus Gains Activity and WP Leads in respective work packages and IWMI Country Representative in managing other relevant One CG initiatives and projects.
  • Identify new research trends and niches and develop multi-year multi-partner proposals for innovative research.
  • Lead and contribute to proposal writing and fundraising opportunities for bilateral and multilateral funding sources.
  • Provide information on relevant projects and research results and breakthroughs for communication to donors, research users, partners, networks and policy platforms.
  • Disseminate research findings via peer-reviewed publications; convene and attend workshops, conferences and webinars in a range of international, regional and national settings.

Requirements

The successful candidate will posses the following:

  • A PhD or equivalent in hydrology, water resources, environmental sciences, natural resources management, or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant post-doctoral professional experience, preferably related to research, and with project management experience in a developing country or South Asia context.
  • Excelling knowledge of integrated hydrological modelling tools and water productivity assessment methodologies
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and research experience relevant to the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem nexus.
  • Experience in engaging with regional and international professional networks and building strong partnerships with different categories of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated evidence of participatory processes; ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders; and excellent project management skills.
  • Evidence of scientific publishing is demonstrated by a very good publication record in peer-reviewed journals, research impact and other acknowledgements.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain development challenges and complex interdisciplinary water, environment, and agri-food systems issues in simple terms.
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, managers, and other stakeholders in a multicultural setting, with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
