Job Description

As the Research Officer- Land and Water Management, you will contribute to One CGIAR’s initiative – Nature-positive solutions for shifting agri-food systems to more resilient and sustainable pathways (Nature+). The successful candidate will be familiar with land and water management, soil and water conservation measures, land degradation assessment and management and its linkage with agrobiodiversity. The Research Officer will be part of Nature positive initiative’s core team and contributing towards work packages on sustainable management of natural resources and restoration of degraded lands. The successful candidate will also provide needs-based support to IWMI’s other relevant research projects portfolio.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work within multidisciplinary research teams to ensure delivery of quality outputs, which include planning and designing of nature positive solutions for soil and water management and agrobiodiversity including restoration and management of land degradation.
  • Design and conduct field surveys to understand the challenges in farming systems in targeted areas.
  • Co-develop action plan with local communities in project location.
  • Contribute to the initiative work streams, from research data collection, analysis, and scientific reporting.
  • Play a key role in coordinating, supporting and undertaking field activities including organizing meetings, dialogues and stakeholder workshops.
  • Contribute to the authorship of key research outputs including research papers, journal articles, technical or policy briefs and blogs.
  • Undertake relevant assignments as requested by the work package lead.
  • Support the IWMI India Country Representative in supporting other relevant IWMI and One CG project portfolio.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • Masters or equivalent academic qualification in agricultural/civil engineering, agricultural sciences/ environmental science with specialization in land and water management/soil and water conservation or any related field.
  • At least 1-2 years of work experience in soil and water conservation, land and water management, integrated watershed management, land degradation etc.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required:

  • Competency and experience in the use of analytical tools and models
  • Excellent understanding of challenges related to soil health, land restoration management, soil and water conservation, agricultural water management and agrobiodiversity.
  • Experience in field work, data collection and analysis.
  • Good technical and scientific writing skills
  • Interest and experience of publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications and in database management
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary environment, with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
  • Knowledge on other local languages is preferred.
  • Research or action-research experience with proven track record of publications in relevant national and international journals.
