**Job Overview**

 

The Girl’s Education Program (GEP) is currently operating in 6 states across India: Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, New Delhi, Uttarakhand, Telangana, and Maharashtra. The program focuses on increasing girls’ years of schooling and promoting their self-awareness, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.

 

As a Social Mobilizer, you will play a crucial role in implementing the GEP at the field level. You will be the primary point of contact for the girls we work with, as well as their families and schools, ensuring the program’s success.

 

**Responsibilities:**

 

**Program Implementation & Planning:**

 

* Gain a thorough understanding of Room to Read’s GEP design, objectives, and outcomes.

* Implement program activities as per design, maintaining fidelity.

* Undertake corrective actions and incorporate feedback from supervisors.

* Participate in program planning in collaboration with Program Associates and state-level staff.

* Attend weekly and monthly workshops for planning and reviewing program progress.

* Participate in mandatory Social Mobilizer trainings.

 

**Family & Community Engagement:**

 

* Demonstrate a strong understanding of social issues, safety concerns, and child protection issues affecting girls.

* Possess awareness of social safety net mechanisms, schemes, and referral options.

* Organize and lead community meetings and consultations with school staff, parents, and community members.

* Discuss life skills content and sensitive issues (e.g., early marriage, menstruation) tactfully.

* Network at the local level to create a resource pool for referrals.

* Facilitate visits from donors, INCO, and SO team members.

* Assist SO/INCO team members with research, surveys, data collection, and baseline assessments.

 

**Working with Girls:**

 

* Conduct life skills sessions for groups of 20-30 girls, delivering a minimum of 16 sessions per year.

* Demonstrate a strong understanding of life skills content, particularly regarding reproductive health, and deliver it effectively.

* Facilitate the formation and regular meetings of Life Skills clubs/Children groups (at least 8 meetings annually).

* Empower girls to develop skills of articulation and self-expression and initiate action on issues they face.

* Distribute the newsletter “GUPSHUP,” engage in discussions around it, and conduct follow-up activities.

* Help girls create wall magazines and contribute to the state-level Gupshup to amplify their voices.

 

**Mentoring:**

 

* Conduct group mentoring sessions for 10-15 girls, following prescribed content guidelines and recording each session.

* Plan group mentoring sessions with the Program Associate, considering the girls’ expressed needs.

* Conduct individual mentoring sessions as required.

* Develop new mentoring content as needed.

 

**Setting up Life Skills Centers/Gender Resource Centers:**

 

* Establish Gender Resource Centers (GRCs) in schools and communities for life skills sessions.

* Ensure the GRC’s proper functioning and usage as per discussions with state GEP teams.

* Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming space for girls.

* Stock the GRC with drawings, articles, and expressions of children’s voices, updating the materials periodically.

 

**Home Visits:**

 

* Map data based on the risk and response protocol and conduct specific home visits.

* Track each girl, understand risks, flag concerns, suggest solutions, and motivate girls to take action to prevent dropouts.

* Undertake regular school visits and address critical matters arising from these interactions.

* Organize and conduct programmatic activities at school and in the community, managing relationships with both.

* Maintain a high quality of home visits, prioritizing engagement, mentoring, and family outreach.

 

**Record Keeping, Reporting, & Monitoring:**

 

* Update attendance records and parent meeting logs regularly.

* Prepare and submit weekly plans during weekly reviews.

* Maintain timely records, update data, and share analysis of key parameters (e.g., attendance, parent meetings, dropouts).

* Complete socio-economic profiles of the girls.

* Conduct regular physical verification of girls on a sample basis.

* Undertake periodic cohort risk assessments and analysis, flagging issues of concern.

* Conduct risk mapping of the cohort to identify and address potential dropouts.

* Identify case studies of girls, schools, and communities, gathering relevant data and information.

* Maintain stock registers at the school/center level.

* Provide supervisors with a list of materials required for the girls.

 

**Qualifications & Experience:**

 

* Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Sciences, or equivalent.

* Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in the education/development sector (including internships).

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, Hindi, and Marathi.

 

**Preferred Qualifications:**

 

* Master’s degree in Education, Social Sciences, or equivalent.

* Counseling diploma and/or experience in mentoring/counseling.

* Experience working on life skills, gender issues, and adolescents.

* Strong planning and project implementation skills.

* Ability to work in remote areas and travel to communities for meetings.

* Proficiency in working effectively with schools and communities.

* Excellent written and oral communication skills.

* Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.
